The European Union has welcomed the start of political talks between the Federal Government of Somalia and the opposition, following a meeting held in Mogadishu by the Somali President, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud.

The EU Ambassador to Somalia, Francesca Di Mauro, said in a statement published on X.com that the EU strongly welcomes the start of talks between the Federal Government and the Somali Future Council, an opposition coalition.

The EU’s announcement came after a preliminary agreement was reached to hold a consultative meeting between the Somali Government and the opposition coalition, the Somali Future Council, which is set to be held at the National Presidency.

The decision was said to have been made following a request by President Hassan Sheikh, with both sides showing flexibility and compromise to create an atmosphere for formal dialogue.

The international community wants a political agreement to be reached in Mogadishu that paves the way for inclusive elections, so that the country can peacefully transition from a period of political division and conflicting views among its leaders.
