Somalia has received official approval to issue East African Community (EAC) passports, a significant diplomatic achievement that strengthens regional integration.

The passport approval letter was presented by the Somali Ambassador to Tanzania and Permanent Representative to the EAC, Ilyas Ali Hassan, and was presented by the Somali Minister of Internal Security, Abdullahi Sheikh Ismail “Fartaag”, and the Director General of the Somali Immigration and Citizenship Agency, Mustafa Sheikh Ahmed Dhuuxulow.

The approval allows Somalia to print and issue EAC passports, a process that began in December 2025, and is expected to facilitate the free movement of Somali citizens within the EAC member states.

“This marks a significant diplomatic achievement for the Federal Government of Somalia, and also strengthens regional integration and facilitates the movement of EAC citizens,” Ambassador Ilyas said on social media.

Somalia’s accession to the EAC passport system is seen as a major diplomatic step, part of broader efforts to strengthen relations with neighboring countries and deepen cooperation within regional frameworks.
