The Awdal Regional Tribal Cultural Committee has denied that the peace agreement between the Awdal and Salal clans was reached, as stated by the Minister of Interior of Somaliland on 14-02-2026.
The committee stated that the community is deeply concerned about the statements made by the minister, describing them as misleading and not reflecting the reality in the areas where the conflicts occurred.
The committee’s press release stated that the minister claimed that the conflict in those areas had ended, however, this is far from the truth, as there have been heavy fighting there in the last two days that caused significant loss of life and property.
The committee rejected the accusation that the minister had blamed their clans, which he said were the cause of the conflicts. The committee described this as baseless and contrary to the harmony and peace of the local community.
“The minister openly and blatantly insulted the traditional leaders of the Gadabuursi clans, calling them warlords who oppose peace. We have to say that the minister is below you, you have forgotten that the traditional leaders of the clans are the ones who created and brought about the peace and beauty that you are the minister for.”
On the other hand, the committee said that the minister’s statements indicate a change in his previous position, noting that there have been peace efforts by traditional leaders and government officials.
Finally, the Gadabuursi Tribal Cultural Committee called on the community and the government of Somaliland to work together for lasting peace and resolution of existing conflicts, while also stressing the need to maintain cooperation and overall stability in the region. The committee stated that they will continue their role in peacemaking and maintaining social unity.
“We would like to clarify to our community and the government of Somaliland that we have temporarily suspended our cooperation with the Minister of Interior, as the Minister has left the fold of government. He has also lost his neutrality.”
