Kenyan President William Ruto has made new appointments to his country’s diplomatic service, which will have a particular bearing on Kenya’s relations with Somalia.
An official statement announced that Elias Bare Shill has been appointed as the Deputy Ambassador of the Republic of Kenya to the Federal Republic of Somalia. Elias Bare will work under the current Kenyan Ambassador to Mogadishu, Kubai Iringo.
The appointments are part of what Kenya says is a major shake-up in the foreign service by President Ruto, which includes the transfer and filling of vacancies in Kenyan embassies in various countries.
Meanwhile, Ambassador Joseph Warui has been reassigned to Russia, where he will represent Kenya in Moscow. Similarly, Mohammed Hussein Nur has been appointed as Kenya’s Deputy Ambassador to Tanzania.
Elias Bare Shill’s appointment was described as strengthening diplomatic relations and security, political and economic cooperation between Kenya and Somalia, at a time when the two countries share many interests in regional security and counter-terrorism.
Kenya said the new appointments are part of its expansion of diplomatic presence, with Kenya now having diplomatic relations with more than 72 countries and territories around the world.
Elias Bare Shill previously served as a member of the Kenyan Parliament, representing Garissa County.
