The two Houses of the Federal Parliament of Somalia today held an emergency joint session on the issue of Israel’s alleged recognition of Somaliland, formally issuing a strong resolution condemning the move.

In the extraordinary session, the Federal Parliament of Somalia declared that the Federal Republic of Somalia is an independent state and a full member of the United Nations, with unity, political independence and inviolable territorial integrity.

The Parliament noted that the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Somalia, particularly Articles 1 and 7, clearly states that the unity of the country, its territory and its people are indivisible, and that the northern regions of Somalia are an inseparable part of the territory of the Federal Republic of Somalia.

The resolution also described Israel’s alleged recognition as illegal and in violation of international law, the Charters of the United Nations, the African Union, the Arab League, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, IGAD and the East African Community.

The Federal Parliament of Somalia stressed in its statement that Israel’s move threatens peace and security in the Horn of Africa, and could disrupt global stability.

The resolution issued by the joint meeting clearly stated that any recognition by Israel or any other state towards Somaliland has no legitimacy and will not have any international legal effect.

The Parliament also directed the Federal Government of Somalia to immediately submit this resolution to the United Nations, the African Union, the Arab League, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, IGAD and the East African Community, in order to defend the independence, unity and nationhood of Somalia.

Finally, the Federal Parliament of Somalia warned that any person or entity violating this resolution will be subject to legal measures in accordance with the laws of the country and international regulations.
