The Taiwan Representative Office in Somaliland has issued an official statement in response to a statement made by the President of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, on the Taiwan issue, following an interview with CGTN television on December 21, 2025.
The report stated that the Somali president stated in the interview that China has the military power to “return” Taiwan, a statement that the Taiwan Office described as unrealistic and not reflecting the actual situation in the region.
The Taiwan Representative Office stated that Taiwan is an independent country with full sovereignty, and that there is no sub-national relationship between Taiwan and the People’s Republic of China (PRC).
The report also noted that maintaining freedom, security, peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region is a matter of universal international agreement, and stated that unilateral military actions by China would pose a threat to regional and international stability.
The Taiwan Office also urged the Somali government to focus on developing its domestic affairs and national priorities, rather than engaging in international political conflicts, and noted that hostile rhetoric undermines international trust and peace.
Finally, the statement said that Taiwan will continue to uphold the values of democracy, peace and stability, and will work with its diplomatic partners and like-minded countries to maintain regional and international stability.
President Hassan said that Somalia strongly opposes Taiwan’s independence and supports China’s desire to reclaim the rich island.
