Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has said that Somalia’s statehood does not depend on the support of the international community, but rather on the responsibility and efforts of the Somali people and their government.

President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud noted that the international community has supported Somalia in many important aspects of statehood building, but the challenge remains in Somalia’s own role in these matters — especially in the area of security.

The President said that where things are not going well is in the area of security. He said that achieving a fully-fledged Somali state depends on how Somalia strengthens its security.

He called on the Somali people to overcome any fears they may have and to fully participate in bringing complete and reliable security to the country.

“We are self-sufficient in our country’s leadership, decision-making, development and security. Let us do things that the world cannot do for us. If we secure our security, the world will support us in rebuilding the country,” the president said.

President Hassan Sheikh made this statement at the handover ceremony of the leadership of the National Security and Intelligence Agency that took place tonight in Mogadishu, where he was handing over the reins of the agency to the new director of the National Security and Intelligence Agency, Mahad Salad.
