Somali disability organizations have said that they have been subjected to abuse and neglect by people who have not completed their sixth year of life in a statement made two days ago by the Speaker of the House of the People, Sheikh Aden Mohamed Nur Madoobe, to one of the members of the House of the People.
Mohamed Abdisalam Diiriye, the Chairman of the Somali Disability Empowerment Forum, said that the organization that was supposed to protect the law was called out for discrimination and called on Speaker Aden Madoobe to apologize and withdraw the matter.
“In the last session of the House of the People, the Speaker made a statement that caused concern and distress to the Somali disabled after the Speaker humiliated one of the members of the House of the People because of his disability,” Abdisalam said in an interview with the BBC.
He revealed that this could lead to the MP not attending the sessions of the House of the People regularly and stressed that they would take some time to ensure that Somalia respects the rights of people with special needs.
The statement that greatly angered people with special needs was when Speaker Sheikh Aden Madoobe said to MP Cana Nuug, “MP, you are a piece of cheese, sit down.”
