A conference between Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and some of the heads of the country’s regional states is set to open in Mogadishu on Friday.
The conference, which is a consultative meeting, will be attended by the presidents of Galmudug, Southwest, and Hirshabelle, while the presidents of Puntland and Jubbaland are not part of the conference, which is in strong political tension with the federal government of Somalia.
The Advisor on Constitutional Affairs to the President of Somalia, Hussein Sheikh, said that the purpose of the conference, which opens today in Mogadishu, is for the leaders to follow the framework recently called by President Hassan Sheikh to resolve the current political crisis and the fight against Al-Shabaab and ISIS.
“The president has begun consultations. Today, he will meet with the heads of the regional states of Southwest, Hirshabelle, and Galmudug, and he will discuss the framework he recently extended. The leaders will analyze the format of the framework, and they will exchange important recommendations,” said Advisor Hussein Sheikh.
The Somali President’s advisor on constitutional affairs, Hussein Sheikh, also stated that the Puntland and Jubbaland administrations will be invited to the meeting called by the president, and he also noted that President Hassan Sheikh spoke on the phone with some opposition politicians, although he did not say what they discussed.
