There are reports that some of the Somaliland prisoners held in Lascaanod may be released, following the visit of Somali Prime Minister Hamse Abdi Barre to the city.
Although the SSC-Khaatumo administration has not officially confirmed the news, MP Ahmed Keyse from the SSC-Khaatumo parliament discussed the possibility of this move in a post on his Facebook page.
“Prime Minister Seyid Hamse is a national leader, who represents SSC-Khaatumo in the power-sharing agreement with the Federal Government. We deserve to be honored by the release of some of the prisoners,” the MP said.
On the other hand, the leader of SSC-Khaatumo, Abdiqadir Aw Ali Firdhiye, said that his administration is ready to make unconditional peace with Somaliland, asking the Federal Government to mediate between his administration and Somaliland. This statement indicates the possibility that SSC-Khaatumo has agreed to release prisoners in advance.
“Since August 25, 2023, we have called for peace, and we still stand by it. We are ready for unconditional peace. But we will not accept a peace that undermines our will. Let the Federal Government not mediate,” Firdhiye said.
Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, speaking at a forum in Turkey, said that Prime Minister Hamse is in Lascaanod to find a solution to the conflict between Somaliland and SSC-Khatumo, noting that both sides are still holding prisoners.
