The Prime Minister of the Federal Government of Somalia, Hamse Abdi Barre, today handed over the duties of the new Minister of Defense of Somalia, Jabriil Abdirashid Haji Abdi, and the former Minister of Defense, Abdikadir Mohamed Nur.
Speaking at the handover ceremony, Prime Minister Hamse Abdi said that the Ministry of Defense is the backbone of the National Defense, security, and the development of the National Policy for the reform and upgrading of the Somali National Army.
“The Ministry of Defense has made progress in many areas, including the lifting of the arms embargo on our country after a long time, the preparation of the various forces that participated in the security of the capital, and the preparation of the plan to modernize the Somali National Army, which has undergone a major reform. Therefore, the new Minister is expected to develop the National Policy for the defense and re-liberation of the country,” said Prime Minister Hamse Abdi Barre.
Hamse Abdi Barre also praised the former Minister of Defense for his efforts to establish a national army capable of defending the country from the enemy and ready to eliminate Al-Shabaab.
The Prime Minister urged the new Minister of Defense, Jabriil Abdirashid, to accelerate the reform of the army and the cooperation of security agencies, in order to defeat the so-called terrorist groups with which the government is at war.
Former Minister of Defense Abdulqadir Mohamed Nur and new Minister of Defense Jibril Abdirashid Haji Abdi delivered various speeches at the event on the progress made by the Ministry and how to end the Al-Shabaab group.
Finally, this transfer of power comes after the removal of the Minister of Defense for the past few years, Abdulqadir Mohamed Nur, on March 17.
