A statement from the Kenyan Police Command said that armed men from the Al-Shabaab group, which fights in Somalia, attacked a police camp near the Kenyan border, killing six reservists and taking weapons.
Police spokesman Michael K Muchiri said that the attack on the camp in Garissa County by Al-Shabaab fighters, who are affiliated with Al-Qaeda, also seriously injured four Kenyan reservists.
Muchiri revealed that the Al-Shabaab gunmen shot and stabbed the soldiers, then looted the camp and took weapons. He added that an undisclosed number of Al-Shabaab militants were killed during the attack.
The border areas near the Kenyan-Somali border have been a frequent target of Al-Shabaab infiltration and attacks on Kenyan police forces.
Last week, the US Embassy in Kenya issued a warning to Americans not to travel to the border areas between Somalia and Kenya due to the risk of attacks and kidnappings by Al Shabaab.
