The Puntland administration has openly opposed the national identity card launched by the Federal Government of Somalia in the city of Galkayo.
The Governor of the Mudug region of Puntland, Faysal Sheikh Ali (Jifojabsade), has warned the people of Galkayo not to be fooled by the program, describing it as unconstitutional and unconstitutional.
Governor Jifojabsade has made it clear that Puntland does not allow federal registration in its regions.
Governor Faysal added that anyone who participates in the NIRA registration process to obtain a citizen identity card from the agency will lose their fundamental rights and citizenship in Puntland, and legal action will be taken against them.
“The constitution that Somalis agreed to has been changed and removed. Now an agency called NIRA has come, saying they are doing registration, but the question is: is it legal or not?” said the Mudug governor.
However, the NIRA has started issuing National Identity Cards in South Galkayo, Galmudug, with many people from Puntland receiving these cards.
The Federal Government of Somalia has previously stated that every citizen who receives these cards will be eligible to participate in the elections in person and by vote.
