The United Nations Security Council has expressed concern over the illegal flow of weapons from Yemen into Somalia, in violation of an arms embargo on Al-Shabaab.
The embargo is part of broader international efforts to curb the activities of the extremist group, a major source of instability in Somalia and the wider region.
The flow of weapons from Yemen, itself a country embroiled in protracted conflict, is exacerbating existing security challenges in Somalia.
The Security Council has repeatedly stressed the importance of enforcing the arms embargo to prevent Al-Shabaab from building up its military capabilities.
The UN has called on member states to step up their efforts to monitor and prevent illicit arms shipments, and to work with regional organizations such as the African Union and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) to address the issue.
