The Minister of State for the Ministry of Defense of Somalia, Omar Ali Abdi, said that the Somali government will nationalize the Mawisley army as part of the operations against the Al-Shabaab group in some regions of the country.

In an interview he gave to Somali National TV, the Minister of State stated that the Maawisley are divided into 2 groups, one of which he said is still living on the side of Al Shabaab while the others are part of the fight against Al Shabaab.

“Many of them are registered and paid by the government, we have sent them for training to become part of the Somali National Army,” said the Minister of State for the Ministry of Defense of Somalia, Omar Ali Abdi.

The Minister of State noted that the Somali Police and Security Commands have started to recruit the Maawisley Army and this is part of the government’s measures to recruit the Maawisley Army.

When the government of President Hassan Sheikh started the big operation against Al Shabaab in 2022, it mobilized the people of the area and the Mawiisley army played a major role in many areas that were liberated from Al Shabaab.
