The students of the University of Hargeisa staged a violent demonstration on Monday afternoon, after hearing the news that the semester fee has been increased and that new fees have been imposed on the services they used to receive for free.
The protest, which lasted for hours, led to clashes between the police and angry students. So, the university management later on Monday night denied the news that the students were angry.
“To the students who protested today, the parents and the people of Somaliland, we confirm that you have been given wrong news. There is no increase in money. The one who is causing chaos in the university and inciting violence is the enemy of our future,” said an official of the university administration.
The administration of the university noted that the University of Hargeisa is one of the cheapest universities, and since its establishment, they only tried to increase the semester fee, but the students protested, which led the administration to reverse the decision. .
The protesting students started rioting inside the university, damaging some of the educational materials, after they saw a letter with the university’s stamp stating that the semester fee has been increased.
Also, the students are complaining about services that they used to get for free and now they are charged, such as changing colleges, and they said that a person who wants to transfer to another college will be charged a fee.
The University of Hargeisa, managed by the government of Somaliland, is one of the largest universities in Somaliland, with thousands of students studying there.
Due to the financial burdens, the students were angry about the extra fees they heard were being imposed.
