Puntland has started mobilizing the tribes in the Bari region, especially the area along the Calmikaad area, to participate in the fight against Daesh.

The tribes living in the far eastern villages of the Bari region were said to have been affected by the presence and access of the Daesh organization in some areas.

The first deputy speaker of the Puntland parliament, Mohamed Bari Shire, who recently survived an attack by Daesh in the village of Dharjale, met with the traditional elders of the tribes. The meetings discussed the role of tribes in the fight against extremist groups.

Mohamed Bari Shire said that the Bari region has become “infested” due to the access and influence of Daesh and Al-Shabaab organizations in the local community. He stressed the need for the people and the tribes to work together to eliminate these organizations from their areas.

Puntland’s security forces have found it difficult to get information about the areas where Daesh is located. The recent attack in the village of Dharjale showed the intelligence failure of the Puntland army.

The attacking group was found to have cut hundreds of Kilo Meters, passing through several villages inhabited by rural people. However, these people have not shared any information with the security agencies, due to the fear of the people that Daesh will find out about their relationship with the security agencies.
