The members of the opposition parties in Puntland have boycotted the agreement between the Kaah party chaired by the president of Puntland and the leaders of the United, Labor and Runcad parties, who have agreed on who will be the governors of Garowe, Dangorayo and Godobjiraan.
All the governors of the three districts were taken by the Kaah party, and they are the governors who were already in the office and are coming back.
The opposition MPs accused President Deni and the Minister of Internal Affairs, Juxa, of interfering with the parties and defying the logic of the MPs who wanted to hold elections to fulfill the wishes of the people of the three districts.
The MPs described the agreement between the parties as illegal, saying that great damage was done to the fledgling democracy of Puntland.
The MPs announced that they will hold a peaceful protest and demand that elections be held. They also said that they will choose the governors and deputies among themselves if their calls are not answered.
On the 23rd of July 2024, in the elections held in the three districts, the public voted 70% for the opposition parties seeking change.
However, the electoral law stipulates that the parties can agree to establish local councils together.
