The Djibouti government said that it is still waiting for Ethiopia to respond to Ethiopia’s request for the Tojorah port in the north of the country.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Djibouti, Mohamud Ali Yusuf, who gave an interview to VOA, said that they are still hopeful that Ethiopia will accept their proposal and use the port of Tojorah.
“The matter is still on the table, our main aim was to reduce the tension between Ethiopia and Somalia, since Ethiopia is looking for a sea route, we have shared one of the ports in the north of the country with Ethiopia,” he said. Minister Yusuf.
He said that if Ethiopia accepts Djibouti’s request, the two sides will look at the type of agreement that they can enter into together, such as establishing a business company that will boost the economy of both countries, and he said that they are still waiting for an answer. Ethiopia.
He said that Djibouti is making every effort to calm the tension between the two sides, and he noted that Djibouti has a special responsibility for the security of the region as it is the chairman of the IGAD Regional Organization.
On August 31, Minister Yusuf said that they have promised Ethiopia the port of Tojora and will transfer 100% of its management, saying that they will mediate between Somalia and Ethiopia, but on September 3, he said again that Djibouti alone is preventing Ethiopian business from going to Ethiopia. take control of the ports of Berbera and Musawac, and the dispute between the two countries will be resolved by themselves, but they are only businessmen, adding that we will not hand over 100% of the port management to Ethiopia.
Ethiopia has recently defended its agreement with Somaliland in front of the United Nations Security Council, saying that it is in the interest of the region, and the Somali government has strongly opposed the agreement.
The talks between the two countries are now hopeless, according to Somalia’s Foreign Minister Ahmed Macalin Fiqi.
