The secretary of the IGAD regional organization, Mr. Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu, paid an official visit to Mogadishu to hold high-level consultations with the federal government of Somalia.
A press release from the visit of the IGAD secretary said that this visit underscores how IGAD is committed to strengthening its deep cooperation with Somalia, a founding member of the IGAD regional organization, and strengthening the joint efforts of to ensure peace, stability, and sustainable development in the Horn of Africa.
During his visit, H.E. Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu met with the President of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud. Their discussion focused on peace and security in the region, economic cooperation, and IGAD plans in Somalia.
President Hassan Sheikh once again confirmed that Somalia is committed to strengthening IGAD relations for the development of the region.
A special meeting with Ahmed Fiqi, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Somalia, H.E. Dr. Workneh signed an agreement with the Somali government to further strengthen the relationship between IGAD and Somalia. The main point of the agreement is to establish a regional center of excellence in the field of blue economy.
Dr. Workneh praised the Federal Republic of Somalia for the steps it is taking towards peace and government building, highlighting the important role Somalia plays in shaping stability and security in the region. He also assured that IGAD will continue to support Somalia’s efforts to address challenges such as countering violent extremism, addressing climate change, and fostering inclusive governance.
Dr. Speaking about the visit, Workneh said, “Somalia is not only a founding member of IGAD but also an important partner in our shared mission of promoting peace, stability, and development in the Horn of Africa.” We stand by Somalia as it continues on its path to lasting peace and prosperity, and we will continue to support the government’s efforts to build a resilient nation.”
