A Kenyan court has sentenced Jackton Jacob Kanoti, known as Abdul Hakim, to thirty years in prison after being accused of involvement in ISIS and al-Shabaab.

This man was arrested in the Siaya area with materials and information related to extremist ideas, such as videos narrating terrorist activities.

The Kenyan government described the arrest and conviction of this man as a major success, which it said is part of the fight against terrorist groups.

Kenya says there is a growing number of terrorist groups using social media to radicalize, recruit, communicate, fundraise and plan terrorist activities.

“Social media users are advised to report terrorist activities to security agencies and technology companies to create safe online spaces,” said a statement from Kenya’s security agencies.

Kenya said terrorist groups are now targeting regions not traditionally known to face terrorist threats such as Siaya, Kisii, Uasin Gishu, Nakuru and Kakamega.

In recent times, Kenyan security agencies have intensified cross-border operations, which have led to the capture and trial of many Al-Shabaab members.
