Five people died and five others were seriously injured in an explosion hidden in a donkey truck, which exploded in the Kenyan city of Elwak, according to the Minister of Interior Kithure Kindiki.

The explosion, which took place on Monday, was not claimed by anyone, however, it took place in an area regularly targeted by the Al-Shabaab group.

The explosion was hidden in a donkey cart to avoid detection, said the Minister of Interior.

“The crime scene has been cordoned off to facilitate evacuation and investigations while security forces are in pursuit of the attackers.”

The minister did not say who is believed to be behind the blast.

This attack follows an incident earlier this month, when gunmen suspected of being linked to Al-Shabaab attacked Alwaq Hospital, targeting security guards and asking where the doctors were.

No one was arrested after the attack.

Al-Shabaab argues that its attacks are revenge against the Kenyan forces as part of the African Union mission supporting the central government of Somalia.

The African Union Transitional Mission in Somalia is expected to end in December, with Somali forces taking over security responsibilities.
