The United States government has said it will re-evaluate its relationship and cooperation with the Special Forces Danab, a unit of the Somali National Army (SNA).

A US official told Reuters that Washington is taking all allegations of corruption seriously. Danab Army officials have been accused of diverting rations to the black market in violation of an agreement between Somalia and the United States.

“We look forward to working with Danab on accountability measures to prevent incidents that could affect future aid,” the official said, without directly commenting on whether the US has stopped supporting Danab forces.

Sources say that the US government wants to stop supporting Danab by June 2024.

The Somali government has said that it has suspended and arrested several members of the Danab army officers, after they were accused of diverting the army’s rations.

The Danab force has been an important pillar of the US-backed efforts to fight Al-Shabaab.
