A boat carrying 77 people sank off the coast of Djibouti on Tuesday, killing 21 Ethiopians and 23 others missing, according to the United Nations Migration Agency. This is the second such incident in two weeks.

Tanja Pacifico, head of the International Organization for Migration’s (IOM) office in Djibouti, said the death toll had risen to 16.

33 people, all Ethiopians, were also rescued.

The boat that sailed from Yemen to Djibouti was among the people on board. The IOM agency published information about this event on the X social network.

It was yesterday when the Ethiopian embassy in Djibouti confirmed that five children and women were among the dead. Ethiopia’s ambassador to Djibouti, Berhanu Tsegaye, said, “I offer my condolences to our citizens who lost their lives in this recurring tragic incident.

He went on to say, “Illegal travel from Djibouti to Middle Eastern countries is very dangerous, and we are constantly losing the lives of our citizens.”
