Kenyan President William Ruto has worked to calm the tension between Somalia and Ethiopia, as a result of the maritime agreement between Ethiopia and Somaliland.
William Ruto, who tried to mediate between Hassan Sheikh and Abiy Ahmed, was rejected by the Somali president who said that he will not negotiate with Abiy Ahmed until Ethiopia cancels the agreement.
Abiy Ahmed insisted that the agreement was a commercial agreement, not that Somali land was acquired by Ethiopia.
Kenya has convinced Addis and Mogadishu to tone down their public statements against each other.
According to diplomatic sources, on Thursday night when the two leaders of Somalia and Ethiopia left Nairobi, it was agreed that they would no longer speak in public.
