A group of suspected Somali pirates boarded and hijacked a Sri Lankan fishing vessel with six crew members.
It is the latest attack against ships in the Indian Ocean, according to the International Maritime Organization.
A spokesman for the Sri Lankan Navy, Gayan Wickramasuriya, said that the Lorenzo Putha-4 ship was seized on Saturday 840 miles southeast of Mogadishu.
International naval forces have been diverted to the northern part of the Gulf of Aden in the Red Sea to counter Houthi attacks, raising fears that Somali pirates may revive and take advantage of the change.
After the hijacking of this ship, Sri Lanka has put the combined forces of the seas on alert, according to Wickramasuriya who spoke to the AFP agency.
