The president of Somaliland, Muse Bihi Abdi, said that only Ethiopia will rent a military base, but Somaliland will not be given a port.
The president, who gave an interview to the government-language media, said that Ethiopia will use the port of Berbera and will be the first country to recognize Somaliland.
“The agreement is based on giving their navy a base to live in, and Ethiopia being the first to recognize Somaliland, and these two things happen together, the two points are the basis, everything else is cooperation,” said President Bihi.
The president said that there is no other port that Ethiopia is building in Somaliland, but it will use Berbera port, which will boost Somaliland’s economy and the port will have a market.
On the other hand, he said that there is nothing in common between Somaliland and Somalia, and they are governments with different systems and laws, and deal with the world independently, adding that the Somali government cannot enter into this agreement anywhere.
The President, who spoke about the resolution of the Arab League regarding the understanding between Somaliland and Ethiopia, said that he does not understand the borders that the Arabs said they are defending and whether the borders are in Somaliland or not.
He said that the border of Somaliland is the only one that is in accordance with the border law in Africa, saying that there is no legalized border between Somalia and Ethiopia, but the border of Somaliland is the only legal one.
He said that the countries of the region that have ports are competing for the large market of Ethiopia, Somaliland is one of them.
