The Prime Minister of Somalia, Hamse Abdi Barre, told the Arab Foreign Ministers that the agreement between Somaliland and Ethiopia, to allow Addis Ababa to enter the Red Sea, will harm the security of the Arab countries.
Prime Minister Hamze said this at an emergency meeting of the Arab League’s foreign ministers, which Somalia demanded to discuss the agreement signed on January 1.
“I am calling on the Arab governments to come closer to each other and turn away from Ethiopia’s conspiracy and declare that they stand by Somalia,” said Prime Minister Hamse.
“We want you to come up with strong decisions against Ethiopia’s aggressive ambitions and those behind them. It is a direct threat to the security of Arab countries and Red Sea vessels.
Egypt’s Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry, whose country has a long-standing water dispute with Addis Ababa, said at the meeting that this agreement is the latest in a series of unilateral measures that Ethiopia is ignoring. the interests of African governments.
“This unilateral move by Ethiopia is a threat to the security of Arab nations and Red Sea vessels,” Somalia’s ambassador to the Arab League, Ilyas Abu Bakr, said earlier this week.
Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and Somaliland’s President Muse Bihi Abdi signed an agreement on January 1 of this year that Somaliland will lease 20km of land from Ethiopia, while Ethiopia will recognize Somaliland.
