Two U.S. Navy sailors went missing while conducting operations off the coast of Somalia on Thursday, according to the U.S. Central Command.
A brief statement issued said that a search and rescue operation is underway to find the sailors.
The statement did not provide further information about the occupation of the sailors when they went missing.
“Out of respect for the sailors’ families, we will not be releasing any additional information at this time,” the statement from Central Command said.
The missing sailors arrived at a time when the United States is carrying out operations in the Red Sea against the Houthis, who are a threat to American ships.
The United States has a small number of troops in Somalia focused on the threat posed by Al-Shabaab.
