Turkey has strongly opposed the agreement signed by Ethiopia and Somaliland on January 1, 2024, which they consider offensive to the rights and interests of the Somali people.

This agreement, which is called the Cooperation and Cooperation Agreement, was announced in Addis Ababa by the Prime Minister of Ethiopia, Abiy Ahmed, and the President of Somaliland, Muse Bihi Abdi, without consulting and informing the Federal Government of Somalia.

In a statement issued on January 4, 2024, the Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkey, Mr. Öncü Keçeli said that Turkey is very concerned about this unilateral action, which he said is against international law and good neighborly principles.

“Turkey reaffirms its steadfast commitment to the unity, independence and territorial integrity of the Federal Republic of Somalia,” said Mr. Keçeli.

Turkey hopes to end the conflict between Somalia and Somaliland peacefully through direct dialogue and negotiation between the parties in Somalia, and reiterated that Turkey supports every effective effort.
