The Federal Government of Somalia has opposed today’s statement by the regional organization IGAD, which the Somali government has seen as unbiased in support of the Ethiopian government.
In a press release issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Federal Government of Somalia, the Executive Secretary of the IGAD regional organization, Dr Workneh Gebeyehu, has been asked to apologize for the statement he issued today.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs described the statement issued by IGAD as unfortunate, as it did not condemn the Ethiopian government for violating the independence and territorial integrity of Somalia.
“The Federal Government of Somalia disagrees with the content of the statement issued by the Executive Secretary, and considers it supportive of the Ethiopian government. The Federal Government of Somalia calls on the Executive Secretary to immediately apologize, withdraw his statement, and take appropriate action,” said the statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Somalia.
This news from the government of Somalia comes as earlier today the Executive Secretary of IGAD called for the IGAD leaders to retire from the issue of Somalia and Ethiopia and resolve the conflict through peace and dialogue.
“Given the current circumstances, the Executive Secretary proposes to the leaders of IGAD to take control and asked the two brotherly countries to work together to resolve the situation in a peaceful and harmonious way, while maintaining the shared values that unite them. The IGAD family remains committed to promoting peace, stability, cooperation, and integration in the region,” the statement said.
