More details have emerged from an attack by the Al Shabaab group at midnight last night on the ATMIS African Union military base in the Buulo Mareer district of the Lower Shabelle region.
The spokesperson of the African Union forces in AMISOM, Lt Col Mwachinalo, who spoke to Hiraan Online media, said that they foiled the attack, adding that there were no casualties.
“Last night in Bulomareer area around 21:00 pm, suspected Al-Shabaab fighters attacked the Bulomareer base using small arms. The ATMIS forces responded to the attack, said the ATMIS spokesman.
In May 2023, Al-Shabaab launched a more powerful attack on the same ATMIS base in Bulo Mareer, resulting in the loss of more than 50 Ugandan soldiers, as well as military vehicles and weapons. its army was released from that attack.
Recently, the Ugandan government has fired two army officers who were working at the Bulomareer base, who were found guilty of not engaging the army to fight the Al-Shabaab attack.
Uganda is the country with the most troops in Somalia. Its forces are mostly operating in the Banadir region and the Lower Shabelle region.
