The United States has awarded $2 million to the United Nations Support Fund for Somalia (UNSOS) to strengthen the fight against Al Shabaab.
UNSOS supports the Somali Security Forces and the African Union Transitional Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) to cooperate in joint operations against Al-Shabaab.
This prize money will be used to finance the transportation and medical evacuation of the Somali Security Forces in accordance with the mandate of UNSOS.
“It is important that Somalia’s security forces and ATMIS receive the logistical support needed to defeat al-Shabaab on the battlefield,” said Shane Dixon, US Embassy Chargé d’Affaires in Mogadishu.
“We are proud to support UNSOS, an important partner of the United States and Somalia in our shared mission of promoting peace.” Shane Dixon continued.
UNSOS is currently mandated to support 15,900 members of the Somali Security Forces, to support the logistical needs of the forces.
UNSOS said the donation was timely. She said it will positively affect operations in providing emergency logistical support to the Somali Security Forces.
