The Secretary General of the United Nations appointed the Deputy Representative of the United Nations in Somalia.

United Nations Secretary General António Guterres has appointed George Conway from Canada as the Deputy Special Envoy of the United Nations in Somalia (UNSOM) and Resident Coordinator in Somalia. Mr. Conway will also serve as humanitarian affairs coordinator.

Mr. Conway took over from Adam Abdelmoula, who was born in Sudan and was appointed as the Resident Coordinator in Syria, and the Secretary General thanked him for his efforts and service in Somalia.

Mr. Conway has more than 20 years of experience in crisis prevention and peacebuilding.

He served as the Director of UNDP Somalia (2013-2019). He has also held several senior positions at UNDP, including Strategic Adviser in the Africa Regional Office, Acting Director of UNDP South Sudan, Head of Programs in South Sudan (Sudan), and Crisis Prevention Program Specialist. and strategic planning in Indonesia

Mr. Conway holds a Master of Arts in International Affairs from Carleton University in Ottawa, an interdisciplinary Master of Arts from the University of Western Ontario, and a Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology from the University of Winnipeg.
