The Uganda Defense Forces (UPDF), which consists of infantry and armed forces, said they have retaken control of the town of Buulo Mareer and the villages under it which were captured by the Al-Shabaab group recently.
Brigadier General Peter Gaetano Omola, who is the commander of the 1st division, who was talking about the operation they carried out in Goloweyn area, said that the situation has returned to normal and they have reopened the traffic and people.
“Citizens and travelers are free to go about their normal activities. We conducted an operation to confirm that Al-Shabaab is still hiding in the area. The road was also cleared of explosives. People can now continue with their daily work,” said Peter Gaetano Omola.
Brig Gen. Omola said that the Ugandan forces who are part of the ATMIS mission are committed to supporting peace and stability in Somalia.
On May 26, 2023, Al-Shabaab, using three trucks loaded with bombs and hundreds of fighters, attacked the ATMIS military base in Bulomareer.
Al-Shabaab said they killed 137 Ugandan soldiers in the attack. By presenting prisoners they captured in the attack and war vehicles they burned.
