The United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) carried out an airstrike targeting the Al-Shabaab group in Jilib district on May 20, 2023.
According to Timothy S. Pietrack, AFRICOM’s Deputy Chief of Public Affairs, the initial assessment of this attack shows that the bombing was carried out without causing any harm to the public.
The specific target of this attack was not mentioned, although Jilib is the main center where the top leaders of al-Shabaab are located, and where they have the largest number of troops.
AFRICOM said this is an important step in the ongoing efforts of the United States and its allies to fight Al-Shabaab, which is responsible for many acts of terrorism in the region.
The United States government said that Al-Shabaab is a group that is still resilient, which requires continuous international efforts to prevent their threat.
