Ethiopia’s ambassador to Somalia, Muqtar Mohamed Waare, has apologized for a statement he made in the media, after reports emerged that he may be removed from his position.
As reported by the media in Ethiopia, Ambassador Waare described Somalia as a country created by colonialists, and Somaliland is an independent country that has both formal and legal authority to sign international agreements.
Ethiopia’s ambassador to Somalia said that his words were misguided and were never intended to harm the relationship between the two countries.
“I sincerely apologize to the government and the Somali people. My words were misguided and I never meant to harm our relationship. Somalia and Ethiopia have a deep relationship, and I am determined to work tirelessly as an ambassador to strengthen the relationship between our brother countries to strengthen cooperation.” said the Ethiopian ambassador to Somalia.
Ethiopia has recently signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Somaliland administration which will allow Ethiopia to enter the Gulf of Aden so that Ethiopia recognizes the independence of Somaliland, they said.
The President of Somalia Hassan Sheikh has signed a law to cancel the agreement, saying that this law will strengthen the government’s decision to protect unity, independence and solidarity according to international law.
