The United Nations Office in Somalia strongly condemned the attack by the Al-Shabaab group which caused damage in the Halane camp in Mogadishu.

The mortar attack has confirmed the death of one of the United Nations guards, who was in the building of the United Nations Office in the vicinity of Aden Adde Airport, according to a press release from the United Nations Office in Somalia.

“The United Nations Security Forces play an important role in ensuring the safety and security of the United Nations personnel working to support peace and state-building in Somalia. We condemn this act of violence and our thoughts are with the family and friends of the victim during this difficult time,” said the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Somalia Catriona Laing.

The news from the United Nations Office also said that the attack caused other damage to the United Nations infrastructure.

Al-Shabaab, which is fighting in Somalia, claimed responsibility for the mortar attack, and it is not the first time that the group has carried out such an attack on the Halane camp in Mogadishu.
