The European Union stood by to respect the independence of Somalia after Ethiopia signed a controversial agreement with Somaliland.

The agreement signed on Monday between Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and Somaliland President Muse Bihi Abdi gives Ethiopia the opportunity to lease a Red Sea port and a military base.

The press release of the European Union stated that they would like to remind the importance of respecting the unity, independence and territorial integrity of the Federal Republic of Somalia in accordance with its constitution, the Charter of the African Union and the United Nations.

“This is key to peace and stability in the entire Horn of Africa region,” said the EU spokesperson.

Somalia on Tuesday vowed to defend its land as it described the agreement between Ethiopia and Somaliland as aggressive.

The Somali government also said it has summoned its ambassador to Ethiopia, and issued a request to the international community to support the “bare attack” on its independence.
