The families of seafarers who were aboard a commercial ship that were hijacked by Somali pirates this December, are concerned about the living conditions of their sons.
An official of the Myanmar Seamen’s Union, whose name is shortened to MSF, said in a statement that the families of the hostages have not been able to make contact with the pirates who have the ship Ruen.
They reported that the families faced a situation of anxiety, as they could not confirm the situation on the ship.
The crew members are from Bulgaria and Myanmar. One of the crew members was taken off the ship by the Indian Navy for treatment of an injury caused by the pirates, while there were reports that the hijackers will give the crew a phone to contact their families.
The UK’s maritime security watchdog, UKMTO, has asked shippers to report suspicious activity over concerns that pirates are using the small vessel as a base.
