The government of Somalia has greatly welcomed the decision of the United Nations Security Council to lift the arms embargo on Somalia.
The president of the federal government of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud said that the government of Somalia after 31 years has full power to buy weapons.
The president said that the countries that support Somalia and those that are friends with it can provide any weapon that Somalia asks for. He pointed out that the government will take strict responsibility for the flow and control of weapons entering the country.
President Hassan Sheikh also noted that the world has recognized that there is a responsible government in Somalia, which is capable of controlling the country’s weapons.
“I want to congratulate the Somali people that we have been acknowledged that the country of Somalia has a responsible government, which can take international responsibilities related to security, and national responsibilities related to its people,” said the president.
Hassan Sheikh said it took a long time for Somalia to gradually complete the weapons management system in the hands of the government.
On the other hand, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Somalia said that the lifting of the arms embargo is an indication of how relentlessly the international community supports Somalia to achieve lasting peace.
The ministry said the government is looking forward to continued cooperation in addressing the challenges and taking advantage of the opportunities ahead.
