The Somaliland Ministry of Trade and Tourism has officially opposed a bread price hike recently announced by individuals claiming to represent the “Bread Manufacturers’ Association” of Somaliland.
The Ministry stated that the association is not registered with the Ministry and lacks the legal status required to officially speak for or represent bread manufacturers and businesses.
The Ministry noted that, despite global economic fluctuations, there is currently no valid justification for raising the price of bread—a staple food consumed regularly by the people of Somaliland.
It stated that the price increase could impose an additional financial burden on families and low-income individuals; therefore, the Ministry does not accept the price hike announced on September 26, 2026.
The Ministry of Trade and Tourism also called upon those claiming to represent the “Bread Manufacturers’ Association” to substantiate the association’s legal status and to comply with the Ministry’s regulations and procedures. The Ministry further stated that any business organization or cooperative lacking legal personality and proper statutory registration has no right to use the name or claim to represent traders and companies, warning that anyone acting in violation of these legal regulations will face legal action.
Finally, the Somaliland Ministry of Commerce and Tourism affirmed its commitment to prioritizing the public interest, the cost of living for the community, and market stability, emphasizing that business activities must be conducted in accordance with the law.
