Somaliland leader Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi Cirro stated that various African and other nations are undertaking diplomatic efforts to oppose the recognition of Somaliland.
Speaking at a meeting in New York, Cirro noted that Turkey has been active in numerous African countries, alleging that these actions have influenced nations that had previously intended to recognize Somaliland.
“There are many countries—both African and non-African—conducting campaigns against the recognition of Somaliland,” President Cirro said.
The President specifically singled out Turkey, noting that its visits to many African nations have contributed to efforts aimed at preventing Somaliland’s recognition.
Cirro also identified Egypt as one of the countries actively opposing Somaliland’s recognition. Egypt has officially opposed the recognition Somaliland extended to Israel, affirming instead its support for Somalia’s unity and territorial integrity.
President Cirro stated that this diplomatic pressure has caused some of the countries that were expected to recognize Somaliland to hold off on taking that step. “That resulted in many countries that wanted to recognize us actually recognizing us,” he said.
However, the President of Somaliland expressed hope that Somaliland’s efforts would ultimately yield results, stating that “the truth will prevail.”
