The United Nations has launched a commercial auction process for its equipment and supplies in Somalia, with the official UN procurement website publishing a notice on the “Commercial Sale of UN Items in Somalia”.
The notice, issued by the UN Secretariat, indicates that it is seeking local companies or bidders to participate in the sale of various UN items in Somalia. The items mentioned include vehicles, office equipment, construction equipment, medical equipment, generators and other items.
The move comes at a time when the political role and presence of international organizations in Somalia is changing, especially after the Federal Government of Somalia has recently expressed its desire to take over the political, security and administrative responsibilities previously held by international organizations.
The UN equipment auction can also be seen as part of the restructuring and reduction of the UN mission’s presence in Somalia, although the auction document itself does not specify that all of the equipment is coming from the UN political office.
This development comes as Somalia seeks to strengthen its political independence and the capacity of its government institutions, while reducing its reliance on external intervention and support.
However, the equipment auction alone cannot be taken as evidence that the UN is withdrawing from Somalia altogether; rather, it signals a change in the nature and scope of its presence in the country.
