Former Somali Foreign Minister Mohamed Abdirisaq said that the Peace and Life Party is clearly opposed to proposals calling for the country to return to the transitional system, describing it as not based on a long-term vision that can contribute to the country’s political situation.
Abdirisaq made the remarks in an interview in which he discussed a letter that the Future Council, a coalition of opposition parties, sent to the countries with troops in Somalia and international partners. The letter is said to have proposed the establishment of a transitional system for Somalia to find a solution to the political conflict.
He said that the Peace and Life Party, led by former Somali President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo, never supports returning the country to the transitional stage.
“Returning to the transitional system would be a political setback, not a lasting solution to the challenges,” Abdirisaq said.
He also criticized President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, saying it was regrettable that during his term in office, Somalia first emerged from the transitional period, and now there is talk of returning the country to that stage.
However, Abdirisaq noted that the most appropriate solution is to continue the ongoing dialogue among Somali political parties and reach an agreement based on compromise and consultation, rather than creating a new transitional process.
These comments come as debates intensify over the direction of Somalia’s political process, particularly the controversy surrounding elections, constitutional review and the country’s power-sharing process.
