The Somali Cabinet on Thursday approved the appointment of four members to the Supreme Judicial Council, following a proposal submitted by the Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, with the move being described as implementing Article 145 of the 2026 Federal Constitution of Somalia.
The Cabinet meeting chaired by the Deputy Prime Minister of Somalia, Saleh Ahmed Jama, approved by a majority vote the appointment of two senior lawyers and two legal experts, who will serve on the Supreme Judicial Council for a period of five years, upon completion of their approval procedures.
The appointed members are Mohamed-Deeq Ma’alin Adan, Maryan Sheikh Osman, Abdirisaq Mohamed Ismail and Abdiqadir Ali Ma’alin.
The Supreme Judicial Council also includes members who assume their positions automatically, including the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, the Chief Justice of the Constitutional Court, the Attorney General, the Chief Justices of the High Courts of the states and the Banadir Regional Administration, and the Chairman of the Independent Human Rights Commission.
On the other hand, the Council of Ministers removed the Chairman of the Higher Education Council from his post, appointing Mahmoud Ahmed Jimale to that position.
The meeting also approved the Culture and Arts Bill, a cooperation agreement between Somalia and Oman on air transport, and the African Youth Charter to strengthen the participation of young people in political decision-making and develop their role across the African continent.
