The commander of the Jariiban district police station in the Mudug region of Puntland, Guleed Kadleeye, died in an attack that took place last night after an armed man opened fire on him.
Security officials told HOL that the commander was taken to the Jariiban district hospital with injuries, but later died of his injuries. The cause of his death has not been officially announced.
The deceased, who was among the soldiers trained in Turkey during the government of President Farmaajo, was among the new police officers recently deployed to the districts of Puntland to strengthen security.
He had recently been working to ensure security in the Jariiban district and combat illegal weapons.
Jariiban district is also a base for troops recently recruited by the Federal Government of Somalia, and there are occasional reports of piracy-related activities.
Meanwhile, the Mudug Regional Police Command said that security forces have arrested a man accused of being behind the commander’s murder, named Ibrahim Kooshin.
According to the government, the suspect was arrested in a quick operation by police forces a few hours after the murder. It was also stated that he will be referred to the judicial authorities to undergo legal procedures.
