The Ministry of Information, Culture and Awareness of Somaliland has issued a press release announcing new measures to strengthen the media and security system, which prohibits unlicensed media from conducting media activities.

According to the press release, the Ministry stated that it is fulfilling its constitutional obligations and exercising the powers granted by the Law on the Separation of Government and Independent Institutions, Law No. 71/2025, Article 41.

The Ministry has informed security agencies, media outlets licensed by the Ministry and journalists registered with the Somaliland Journalists Association (SOLJA) that starting today, the use of cameras, mobile phones or microphones carried or operated by people who do not have official journalistic credentials will not be allowed.

The press release also stated that this measure is aimed at protecting the security and existence of Somaliland, with the Ministry arguing that religion, culture, honor and social values ​​must be respected. It also called on the media to refrain from broadcasting shocking images or content that could instill fear in the public.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Information has ordered security agencies to take legal action against anyone seen in markets and cities posing as a journalist or carrying out media activities without a valid journalistic identity.

The press release concluded that these measures are part of efforts to strengthen the media system and ensure security in Somaliland.
