A US citizen of Somali origin has been killed in Garissa town in Kenya’s Northeastern region, following an alleged armed robbery in the Bulla Mzuri area.
The deceased, identified as Osman Aweys Abdi, was found dead near Abu Cubeyda School, suffering from serious injuries from a knife and a sharp object, according to security sources.
Preliminary reports indicate that the deceased’s mobile phone was taken from him, leading police to believe robbery was the main motive for the killing. However, investigations are still ongoing to establish the exact circumstances behind the incident.
According to family members, the deceased’s brother received an anonymous call instructing him to go to the scene of the body. When he arrived, he found Osman seriously injured, but he died before being taken to Antalya Hospital in Garissa.
The killing has sparked outrage among the city’s residents, with politicians and civil society demanding swift justice for those responsible.
Garissa County Women’s Representative, Aamina Udgoon Siyad, has accused gangs of riding motorbikes known as boda-bodas of being responsible for the increasing insecurity, calling for tighter security measures.
The killing of Osman Aweys Abdi has once again highlighted concerns about the rise in violent crime in Kenya’s North Eastern region, where residents have been complaining of robberies and attacks by armed groups in recent times.
Kenyan police said they were investigating the killings, promising that justice would be served once the suspects were arrested.
