The foreign ministers of 15 countries, including Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Qatar, Turkey, Somalia and Pakistan, have strongly condemned a move by Somaliland to open an embassy in the occupied city of Jerusalem.
A joint statement issued by the countries said the move was “illegal” and in violation of international law and United Nations resolutions on the status of Jerusalem.
The ministers stressed that East Jerusalem is Palestinian territory occupied since 1967, saying that any move to change the legal and historical status of the city is “absolutely null and void” and has no international legitimacy.
The statement also expressed the countries’ full support for the unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Somalia, rejecting any unilateral move that undermines the unity of the country.
Countries in the Islamic world have recently been strongly opposing Somaliland’s move to open an embassy in Jerusalem and its relations with Israel.
